Hyatt located at the absolute epicentre of what makes the Mother City tick
Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) opened the doors of the Hyatt Regency Cape Town on Tuesday, 15 December 2020, the first Hyatt-branded property in the ‘Mother City’. The 137-room Hyatt Regency Cape Town represents Hyatt’s growing brand presence across Africa and joins eight existing properties on the continent and is the second Hyatt hotel in South Africa.
Situated at the edge of the Bo-Kaap, the new Hyatt Regency Cape Town aims to be recognised as an active and significant part of what is essentially Cape Town’s most historic quarter. Not only a vital neighbourhood with deep heritage rooted in a robust and vibrant culture, the Bo-Kaap is also an important tourist destination in its own right.
And while guests are within walking distance of several Bo-Kaap food stops, the hotel is destined to be a hub for quality Halaal dining within the community. Its 126 Cape Kitchen & Café, situated just off the lobby on the hotel’s ground floor, is headed up by chef Keith Frisley, previously of the Four Seasons Westcliff in Johannesburg.
Keith, who discovered his passion for food while working his way through the ranks on long-distance passenger trains, has not only worked alongside Michelin-star chefs but also competed internationally as part of South Africa’s national chef team. Keith says he’s thrilled to be back in the Cape after decades in Johannesburg where he’s helmed a variety of hotel kitchens. Born in Wolseley, he says the menus he’s developed for the Hyatt Regency are inspired by the home cooking of his childhood. Many of his recipes are a contemporary reimagining of traditional dishes remembered from the family meals he grew up with.
The hotel also incorporates service signatures that combine familiar Hyatt brand elements with touches that are unique to Cape Town. These include the Market Place, a deli-style take-away café found in all Hyatt Regency hotels. It’s where anyone – guests and passersby – can easily grab a Starbucks coffee to-go or pick up early breakfasts, snacks or lunch made with fresh, locally sourced produce. The deli also prepares travel-size lunchboxes for guests setting off early for sightseeing and can provide on-the-go breakfasts for people checking out super-early.
For guests, another place to unwind is on the hotel’s pool deck, an elevated space to enjoy the sun, with poolside mocktails and al fresco dining in a location that’s slightly removed from the buzz of the city.
However, for guests looking to be immersed in that buzz, the hotel is perfectly located in the very heart of the city, at a crucial Cape Town nexus. The location is second to none in terms of accessibility to the CBD, to the restaurants and shops of Kloof and Bree streets, to the De Waterkant shopping and café precinct, with Green Point, the V&A Waterfront and Silo District, and the Foreshore mere minutes away. Plus, of course, there are the cobblestone streets of Bo-Kaap at your feet, Table Mountain within view, and the white-sand beaches of the Atlantic Seaboard just ten minutes away by car.
The hotel marks the second Hyatt hotel in South Africa and brings the brand’s premium level of service to Cape Town for the first time.
The Cape Town hotel adds to the significant expansion in Hyatt’s brand footprint in sub-Saharan Africa, fuelled by the Hyatt Regency brand. Hyatt Regency Cape Town joins three Hyatt Regency hotels in the sub-Saharan region – Hyatt Regency Johannesburg, Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam, The Kilimanjaro and Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa, along with the planned Hyatt Regency Nairobi in Kenya and Hyatt Regency Lagos Ikeja in Nigeria, set to open over the next three years.
The Hyatt Regency brand is designed with productivity in mind, delivering seamless experiences addressing the needs of both business and leisure travellers. Services and amenities include a memorable culinary experience, flexible spaces to work, collaborate or relax, and expansive technology-enabled facilities for meetings and events, along with expert planners who anticipate every detail of a guest’s stay.
“We are extremely excited to welcome guests to the first Hyatt hotel in Cape Town,” said Asif Raza, General Manager Hyatt Regency Cape Town. “For business travellers, the hotel provides easy access to the financial district and Cape Town International Convention Centre, while its location in the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood makes it a great base for leisure travellers, too. The hotel’s tranquil ambiance and modern design will ensure a stress-free guest experience and we are proud that we can now offer the renowned Hyatt Regency service to visitors to South Africa in both Johannesburg and Cape Town.”
