A recent Expedia Media Solutions study on the length and frequency of trips amongst US, British and Chinese travellers found that British travellers on average took the longest trips, at 9.5 days. The study also found that baby boomers took the longest trips of 9.4 days on average.
The study looked at responses from 3 002 travellers from the three countries across four different generations – baby boomers, Generation X, millennials and Generation Z. Each country-generational segment received over 200 respondents. The travellers were asked to go through different screens where they were asked how many trips they take a year, and how long their trips were.
China
- Baby boomers (55+) take an average of 4.5 trips a year. Their trips average 7.3 days a trip.
- Generation X (36-55) take an average of 5.1 trips a year. Each trip averages around 6.3 days.
- Millennials (24-35) take an average of 5.8 trips a year, with each trip an average of 6.1 days.
- Generation Z (18-23) take an average of 5.4 trips a year. Each trip averages 5.8 days.
USA
- Baby boomers take an average of 3.5 trips a year, with each trip averaging 7.8 days.
- Generation X take an average of 4 trips a year, with each averaging 6.4 days.
- Millennials take an average of 5.6 trips a year. Each trip averages 6.2 days.
- Generation Z take an average of 4.4 trips a year, with each trip averaging 6.6 days.
UK
- Baby boomers take an average of 3.3 trips a year, with each trip averaging 9.4 days.
- Generation X take an average of 3.6 trips a year. Each trip averages 7.9 days.
- Millennials take an average of 4.2 trips a year and each trip averages 6.7 days.
- Generation Z take an average of 2.9 trips a year, with each trip averaging 7.4 days.
British travellers are more likely to take a trip outside their country than Chinese or American travellers. 68% of British travellers are willing to travel outside their country, while only 27% of Chinese travellers and 18% of American travellers are willing to travel outside their countries.
