The People’s Trail Hut in Table Mountain National Park, Western Cape, has undergone renovation with thanks to the SANParks Honorary Rangers, Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon and Table Mountain National Park.
Work included renovating and painting the interior walls, windows, door frames and doors, broken toilet seats were replaced and cisterns repaired. The kitchen and the storeroom were emptied, painted and repacked. Beds were unbolted, dusted and bolted back in place and pictures were cleaned. New interior blinds have been hung on all windows. The hut was refurnished and the old furniture was given to James House children’s home in Hout Bay.
The facility is mainly used to enlighten, expose and instil appreciation for the natural environment in the people who visit it, said Calvin Mojapelo, People and Conservation Manager of Table Mountain National Park.
“SANParks Honorary Rangers could not have undertaken such a challenging and rewarding project as that of renovating the People’s Trail Hut without the generous sponsorship of R100 000 from Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon,” said Sue Smith of the SANParks Honorary Rangers, Table Mountain Region.
The People’s Trail starts at Constantia Nek, opposite the Constantia Nek Restaurant. The two-day trail is a 15km hike, which ends on Table Mountain Road at the bottom of Platteklip Gorge.
