The Dog’s Bollocks in Gardens and Bob’s Bagels in Kalk Bay are just some of the restaurants Cape Town locals know and love but, chances are, tourists have never heard of.
This is what Cape Town Tourism (CTT) is addressing with a new campaign to introduce tourists to the hidden gems in the city’s neighbourhoods. It responds to the ‘travel like a local’ trend, which sees a new breed of travellers wanting to ‘get under the skin’ of destinations and who constantly share their experiences on social media, says CTT’s Content & Communications Manager, Nicole Biondi.
The campaign has kicked off with the launch of the ‘Love Cape Town Neighbourhoods’ series, a collection of online videos showcasing three neighbourhoods: the cosmopolitan City Bowl, bohemian Kalk Bay and eclectic Woodstock, respectively narrated by comedian Siv Ngesi, musician Arno Cartens and celebrity chef, Karen Dudley, who take visitors on a guided tour of their ‘hoods’. More videos of other neighbourhoods are to follow.
CTT CEO, Enver Duminy, says the videos act as online neighbourhood guides, give local businesses exposure on a global platform and allow for a direct injection of funds into areas beyond the traditional tourist routes or sites, ultimately leading to increased job creation and a wider spread of tourist rands.
