This week’s video features a performance of the traditional “rieldans” at Carnarvon Primary School during an event, hosted by the MEC of Tourism in the Northern Cape, celebrating World Tourism Day.
Dating back centuries, the rieldans has its roots in the Khoi and San communities and was historically performed during celebrations and social gatherings. Known for its fast-paced footwork and storytelling movements, the group courtship dance is usually performed in a circle. It is also one of the oldest dancing styles of indigenous South Africa and reflects the daily lives of its people, often imitating animal movements and historical events.
The World Tourism Day performance highlighted not only the cultural richness of the Northern Cape but the region's efforts to preserve traditions while promoting cultural tourism. The energetic dance was a reminder of the province’s deep historical ties and commitment to celebrating its heritage.
