Runners from across South Africa came together to support conservation in the Golden Gate National Park in the Free State at the end of October, during the 11th WILDSERIES Golden Gate Challenge.
The three-day, 70km staged event, which is organised by SANParks Honorary Rangers (SHR) and WILDTRUST, saw participants exploring new routes through the park’s breath-taking landscapes and mountains. Shorter 30km and 16km runs were also on offer.
“It is always nerve-racking as an organiser to alter the norm and explore new trails; changing the venue as well was an added concern. I am so proud to be a part of the WILDSERIES team and watching us pull it off and share in the runners’ emotions throughout the weekend,” commented Hilary Bruss, WILDSERIES race organiser.
As the official volunteer organisation of South African National Parks, SHR has assisted the WILDSERIES Golden Gate Challenge since its inception in 2011, raising more than R1 million (€56 000). The funds have been allocated to various conservation efforts, including the protection of the critically endangered Bearded Vulture. Money has also been used for equipment used in the cutting of trails and fire breaks, and development of the Glen Reenen Interpretation Centre.
“The value of the Golden Gate Challenge is not only that we are able to support the conservation work of SANParks and the SHR, but that we are able to get participants into wilderness areas. Spending time in these natural areas allows people to re-connect with nature and so become advocates and ambassadors for our wild areas,” said WILDTRUST CEO, Roelie Kloppers.
