On World Ranger Day today (Wednesday, July 31), safari lodges and conservation stakeholders across southern and East Africa are giving recognition not only to the people standing at the front lines of protecting the region’s priceless natural assets, but also their trusty canine allies.
The annual observance is dedicated to commemorating rangers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty and acknowledges the invaluable work they do to protect the planet's natural treasures and cultural heritage.
This year's theme, “30 by 30”, aligns with the 2022 United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity (COP 15) global biodiversity framework, which aims for at least 30% of the planet to be effectively conserved and managed by 2030.
The day acknowledges the exceptional people who play a multi-faceted role that encompasses anti-poaching, monitoring, education, community support and enforcing sustainable use of resources.
In addition, recognition is being given to the four-legged heroes found in K9 anti-poaching units around the region.
In South Africa, pet food brand Hill’s Nutrition has supported the provision of food, equipment and healthcare to K9 anti-poaching units since 2012. The critical role played by these canines and their handlers has been highlighted through Hill's Making Contact video series.
“The heart-warming series not only recognises the remarkable role these dogs play in protecting our natural heritage but also their incredible handlers who, through their commitment to working with the dogs, are making a real difference in the fight against poaching,” says Guy Fyvie, Veterinary Affairs Manager at Hill's Pet Nutrition.
One of the success stories stemming from Hill's support can be found at the Manyoni Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal. In 2023, six poachers were apprehended by the K9 unit working in the 23 000 hectare reserve, and their efforts meant that no rhinos were poached for the entire year.
KwaZulu-Natal bore the brunt of rhino poaching in 2023, with 325 animals poached for their horns in the province.
