IN an effort to curb the exploitation of local communities in the surrounding areas of Samburu National Reserve and Community Conservancies in Kenya, the Samburu Cultural Villages Group (SCVG) has introduced a new fee to regulate visits to the region’s cultural villages.
Non citizen visitors are now required to obtain a valid village entry ticket, costing US$20, before proceeding to the sites. A branch office will soon be operational adjacent to the Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves. Meanwhile, tickets are available at the main gate. Trained community scouts will be on hand to ensure compliance and enforcement of the provision. Visits can only be made to villages registered with SCVG and licensed by the County Council of Samburu.
Non-compliance may lead to heavy penalties including possible prosecution and a total ban of the company and guide from the Samburu/Isiolo conservation areas.
