Tanzanian tour operators have welcomed the slashing of tourist guide licensing fees as a progressive step towards strengthening the sector and driving enhanced professionalisation.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism dropped the tour guide licence fee from US$50 to around US$13.6 (TZS35 000) from January 24.
This followed intensive engagements between the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO) and the ministry. TATO Chairperson Wilbard Chambulo said the move is a crucial step towards fostering sustainable tourism growth while maintaining high industry standards.
“The reduction in fees is expected to encourage more tour guides to obtain formal licences, promoting professionalism and improving service delivery in the tourism sector. By lowering financial barriers, the government aims to enhance compliance while ensuring that more individuals can access legal recognition in their profession,” he said.
Chambulo highlighted the importance of licensed guides in maintaining the integrity of world-renowned attractions such as the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Mount Kilimanjaro.
“Ensuring well-trained, professional tour guides is key to enhancing the visitor experience and maintaining Tanzania’s reputation as an unforgettable travel destination,” he said.
