Tourism facilities in Hwange in northern Zimbabwe were not affected after heavy rain of up to 139mm pounded the town over the weekend, resulting in flash floods.
A spokesperson for Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) told Tourism Update that the heavy rains over the weekend were more concentrated on the town. Although there was some rainfall at Hwange Main Camp, there was no damage, and it is safe to visit Hwange National Park.
“The rains give nature an opportunity to re-generate itself, boosting conservation efforts, so it’s a welcome relief. Roads are still passable. People must continue visiting Hwange,” said Langton Masunda a tour operator in Gwayi near the park.
Hwange is the biggest national park in Zimbabwe and is home to 400 different species of birds and 107 types of mammals. The park is just an hour’s drive south of Victoria Falls, and three and half hours from Bulawayo.
