Saruni Basecamp has officially launched Basecamp Samburu – a tented safari camp in Kalama Community Conservancy. Overlooking Mount Ololokwe, the property blends luxury with conservation, offering five tented suites including a family tent with two bedrooms and two open-air “star beds” featuring private jacuzzis.
Designed by Norwegian firm, Bull Arkitekter, the camp also features locally sourced materials to minimise its environmental impact while maintaining high standards of comfort. Basecamp Samburu strengthens Saruni Basecamp’s commitment to community-based conservation by creating employment opportunities and fostering sustainable tourism in Kenya’s northern region.
“Our long-term tourism goal for Kenya has been to support and expand the development of community conservancies. We believe this is the key to protecting wildlife and communities living in rural Kenya side by side. Kalama Community Conservancy is a partnership between Saruni Basecamp and the Samburu tribal landowners in this region,” said Jeremiah Mutisya, CEO of Saruni Basecamp, at the launch.
“We are very excited about the star beds – a new addition to our portfolio. We hope this will bring a new category of traveller to Samburu: honeymooners, adventurers and lovers of skygazing and tranquillity,” he added.
Guests can enjoy night safaris, cultural visits and guided game drives in Kalama and Samburu Game Reserve – home to the “Samburu Special Five”, which includes the reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Grévy's zebra, Somali ostrich and gerenuk. The camp also has WiFi, solar-powered electricity, private verandas and communal lounge and dining areas.
