Ker & Downey Botswana has opened Maxa – a new safari camp in the northeast of the Okavango Delta. The camp accommodates a maximum of 12 guests in five tents, including a family tent.
A prime location for wildlife viewing, beneath a canopy of ebony, marula and leadwood trees, Maxa overlooks the Maxa Lagoon. The area is known for its seasonal herds of zebra and elephant as well as year-round hippos and birdlife. Clear waterways fed by the Okavango panhandle enable mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions and other water-based activities.
Maxa is designed to combine sustainability with luxury, incorporating locally sourced and handcrafted furniture that highlights Botswana’s artisanal skills in woodwork, weaving and pottery. A suspended treetop net for sunset views, elevated wildlife-viewing decks and a wood-fired oven in the main dining area are among the camp’s distinctive features. A natural pool, purified by water plants and biological filters, reflects the camp’s commitment to low-impact tourism.
Activities include walking safaris, day and night game drives, mokoro excursions and cultural experiences in partnership with the Bukakhwe tribe.
