The V&A Waterfront in Cape Town has announced the redevelopment of the King’s Warehouse Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre and the introduction of international retail brands H&M and Hamleys, to be completed in spring 2015.
Developments already completed last year include the amalgamation of the Red Shed Workshop and Blue Shed (the old Craft Market and Wellness Centre) into the new Watershed, which opened in October.
The V&A Waterfront’s Retail Executive, Alex Kabalin, said: “The purpose of the Watershed is twofold. It is a small business incubator on the one hand, and on the other it is a retail outlet with a product offering and range focusing on artisans and designers.” He added that many of the existing retailers and eateries had looked at undergoing refurbishment.
The new Wellness hub, which opened in November, is on the mezzanine level of the Watershed, offering products and walk-in therapies.
The Waterfont’s 2014 retail results reflected year-on-year growth of 19%, down on 2013’s 20%. Visitor numbers for the year hit a record high with 24 million visitors.
CEO, David Green, said: “Our strong performance is the result of our strategy to ensure the V&A Waterfront is fresh and relevant for locals and internationals alike. Over the past two years we have focused on redeveloping existing areas, spending R135 million (€10m), which included the redevelopment of the Food Court, increasing the Pick n Pay store footprint and creating The Watershed, Africa’s new home for craft and design.
