Kegomoditswe Grace Monegi, Sun City Resort’s new IT Manager, is proud to be excelling in her role in a traditionally male-dominated industry, all while combating stereotypes about the reality of working in information technology.
“A lot of people think the IT crew in any organisation are just quiet ‘computer geeks’, but that is not the case. To be an IT Manager, you need to be a real people’s person – because colleagues on every level will need your expertise at one point or another. That’s probably the best part of my job: being able to connect with so many different and interesting people in the organisation.”
Monegi, who grew up in Maile, Rustenburg, has been part of Sun International for two years, having joined the company in 2019 as an IT Service Desk Manager. She believes working for Sun International is “a way to contribute to an exciting and fast-moving industry”.
In her new role as IT Manager, she is responsible for Sun City’s entire information technology operation. This includes issues and activities relating to the operation of data, communication and processing of equipment and services, including server infrastructure and other equipment for the resort.
Monegi’s top three goals for 2022 are to create more functional capabilities in her role in IT, to improve customer and guest satisfaction, and to ensure future skills by training and hiring the right people to “execute the strategy of tomorrow”.
The IT specialist started her career as a System Operator at Teba Bank (Ubank) and later moved to Anglo Platinum Mine as Information Service Manager before being appointed as a Service Delivery Manager at the State IT Agency. In 2017, she joined Sasol as Business Applications Manager before joining Sun International.
Her advice for anyone who has just taken on a new role or a fresh challenge, or who is facing doing something they have never done before in 2022, is to never be afraid to ask questions, to try to meet people and build relationships with them, and to spend time learning how the area you are working in is organised.
