Formula One (F1) is in serious negotiations with Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit to bring the sport back to South Africa, as it works to finalise its 2023 calendar, reports racing news publication, Racer.
The last South African Grand Prix took place in 1993 at the circuit, with F1 not having raced on the African continent since then.
F1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali, has once again confirmed his desire to bring the height of motorsport back to South Africa as soon as possible, according to The South African. It is understood that Domenicali will travel to South Africa next week for further discussions.
The racetrack is currently not an FIA ‘Grade 1’ Circuit yet, and in order to achieve this, further renovations will need to be completed.
Although it is most likely that South Africa will only be added to the schedule in 2024, there is a possibility of this happening as early as next year.
