Tourism Update readers are still wary of placing too much faith in China to boost tourism numbers, despite the reopening of the country’s borders. South Africa’s tourism officials have earmarked the massive potential of China (which was the world’s largest outbound tourism source market in 2019 with 155 million tourists) as an area of focus, but 67% of industry respondents to our latest poll said they would not be placing increased focus on the country in 2023. Only 13% said they would be focusing more on attracting Chinese travellers, while the remaining 20% were still uncertain.
Are regular travellers buying instead of renting?
As car-rental prices continue to increase, regular travellers to South Africa may be weighing up the benefits of buying a car to use when in the country, in lieu of taking out long-term or multiple rentals.
