Tourism Update readers have emphasised that the safety and security of tourists should be the top tourism-related priority of South Africa’s new government administration, with visa reforms not far behind.
Responding to our latest poll, the largest proportion of readers (41%) selected safety and security of tourists as the leading issue which should be put first. South Africa’s cumbersome visa system was also identified as an important issue, with 33% of readers stating that visa reforms should be a top priority. Backlogs in tourist transport operator licenses at the Department of Transport secured 12% of the reader vote, followed by improving the investment environment (9%) and expanding long-haul air capacity (5%).

South Africa’s latest tourism statistics have highlighted a significant rise in the number of visitor arrivals from Australia, providing early evidence of the success of SAA’s April restart of its Perth-Johannesburg route. The SAA flight adds to the existing capacity provided by Qantas, providing more options for connectivity from the Australian market and catering to a strong demand for travel to the tip of Africa.
