Ethiopia declared a state of emergency on Friday, February 16, 24 hours after the resignation of the country’s Prime Minister, Hailemariam Desalegn.
The announcement was made by state media after a Cabinet meeting, and includes a ban on protests and dissemination of publications "that could incite and sow discord", stated Minister of Defence, Siraj Fegessa. "The government has previously made several efforts to curtail violence, but lives have continued to be lost, many have been displaced and economic infrastructure has been damaged."
Advisories have been issued to tourists travelling in and around Ethiopia, highlighting recommended precautions if travelling in various areas.
Tourists are further advised to remain vigilant, exercise caution, monitor local media and social media, and always follow the advice of local authorities. As Internet and other communication services may be disrupted, visitors are advised to ensure that alternative communication plans are in place with family and/or friends.
