Two German tour operators that specialise in Africa have submitted a request to the Administrative Court in Berlin to lift travel restrictions from Germany to Tanzania, Namibia, Seychelles and Mauritius. This follows announcements that the German government would extend warnings against travel outside of Europe to August 31.

Elangeni African Adventures and Akwaba Afrika represented many in their sector when they asked that the warnings against travel to these countries be lifted. The countries listed in their request are either already open or have announced plans of reopening soon.

Despite Tanzania having opened for tourism and implemented health and safety measures, the warning from the German government implies that travel to the country is risky.

"The maintenance of the global travel warning destroys livelihoods in Germany and the destination areas,” said MD of Akwaba Afrika, David Heidler.

“The lack of tourism revenue and the expected mass unemployment mean that the otherwise popular travel countries are heading for an economic and humanitarian catastrophe.”
