RoomRaccoon, a hotel management system, analysed reservation data from over 4 500 rooms in boutique hotels, B&Bs and guest houses nationwide, revealing that rates for the Women's Day long weekend in August were 40% higher than average winter season prices.
The average daily rate (ADR) during the long weekend from August 8-12 this year increased to R1 810 (€92) with a peak of R2 070 (€105) on the Friday, August 9. In contrast, the winter average from June 1 to August 12 was R1 287 (€65) while the year-to-date average stands at R1 991 (€101).
RoomRaccoon data also revealed that independent hotels generated an additional R5.4 million (€274 000) in ancillary revenue during the four days. Popular add-ons included airport transfers, breakfasts, spa treatments and purchases of wine and MCC.
“It’s remarkable to see a long weekend in winter generating results nearly on par with the summer peak season. This rate shows that independent hotels and lodges are effectively capitalising on long weekend local demand – even during traditionally slower periods,” said Niels Verspui, Market Head of RoomRaccoon.
Verspui advised hotels to diversify revenue streams and implement smart upselling strategies to grow revenue beyond increasing ADR.
“Independent hotels with limited room capacity can’t rely solely on bookings for growth. By offering additional bookable services in the booking journey, RoomRaccoon-run hotels are not only filling rooms but also enhancing their bottom line and achieving substantial gains.”
