South African Tourism recently hosted a media delegation from Central Europe to experience and view some of the attractions that have strong historic and social ties to the late Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa.
According to SAT, Germany is currently SA’s third biggest source market and is part of the Central Europe hub that includes Austria and Switzerland.
The timing of the visit was also significant as South Africa celebrated its first democratic elections in April 1994. Added to this, 2018 is the year in which SA commemorates the Mandela Centenary.
“Tourism is one of South Africa’s most important economic drivers and growth areas. Media hostings such as this one are part of SA Tourism’s efforts to market South Africa as a preferred destination for both leisure travel and business events. Members of media are critical partners in sharing South Africa’s multiple tourism experiences,” says Sthembiso Dlaminini, Chief Operations Officer of SA Tourism.
The media were also introduced to the Madiba’s Journey App, which allows users to view the attractions on a map, build their itineraries and share their own journeys on social media. Users can also experience the relevance of each location through audio, text and image galleries. Furthermore, the app offers real-time weather information, distances and details of nearby attractions.
“From vibrant and colourful city lifestyle; to insight into the history and culture; our warm and unique people; to tastings at our world-renowned wine farms, South Africa has it all. Through this particular hosting, we look forward to creating memories and sharing the legacy of one of Africa’s greatest treasures,” concludes Dlamini.
