Mara Plains Camp and Mara Expeditions, of the Great Plains Conservation group, have both reopened following a devastating flood in March.
At Mara Plains Camp, a new suspension bridge over the Ntiaktiak River leads into the camp, after the previous bridge was damaged by the water. Great Plains hopes that the new design will fare better against heavy rains.
Jacqui Usher, CFO at Great Plains said: “The new bridge is solid and aligned with the entrance to the main area so you feel drawn into the vista as you come into the camp.”
A full rebuild of Mara Expedition Camp has also been completed. This includes new canvases and furniture. Usher added: “The new tents are great and finished by the new curtains and linens. The rooms look fresh and inviting.”
Additionally, Great Plains has taken delivery of new Celestron star-tracking telescopes, adding to the activities on offer at the camps.
Hilton Walker, Great Plains’ Sales and Marketing Director, says with the migration expected to arrive later this year, it is probable that there will be herds well into October and November. He encourages people who have not yet booked a trip for this year, to consider the destination. “At this stage there is only a trickle of wildebeest into the area, with some good herds of zebra around both camps.”
