South Africa has flown four cheetahs to Mozambique after they had been held in quarantine for a month and then cleared for travel.
The big cats were captured at reserves in SA and have been sent across the border as part of restocking efforts, reports The Associated Press.
Mozambique’s Zambezi River delta once had a significant cheetah population, but this has been drastically reduced by poaching and other larger cats preying upon them.
In contrast, the cheetah population in SA has been expanding at a rate of eight percent annually, allowing it to export some of the animals to other countries.
In the most recent operation, two male and two female adult cheetahs were tranquilised in the Limpopo province and then flown to Marromeu National Reserve, according to ABC News.
