Luxury African safari group, Sanctuary Retreats, has acquired Okahirongo Elephant Lodge and the eco-friendly Okahirongo River Camp in western Namibia, the first properties to join the group’s portfolio in the country.
Okahirongo Elephant Lodge in Kaokoland has seven private suites on the banks of the Hoarusib riverbed. Bedrooms are decorated with an African ambience and have a private verandah overlooking the desert. The en-suite bathroom has a bath with a view, and indoor and outdoor showers. The family suite has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a private terrace and an open lounge.
Facilities include the main lounge and dining room, an infinity pool and a traditional boma where guests can gather around an evening fire for conversation or stargazing.
Activities include game drives with Himba guides to track desert elephants, lions, giraffe and gemsbok, springbok, steenbok and kudu, as well as birds. Guests can also track Black rhinos on foot, or visit the clay castles of the Hoarusib River Valley with the opportunity to see elephants, giraffes, oryx and jackals.
Okahirongo River Camp is on a ridge above the Kunene River in the northwest of the country, and has five tented cabins, each with a covered deck with river views, an indoor and outdoor shower. The tented family villa has a spacious bedroom with a king-size bed, twin room and expansive decking area.
Facilities include an open-plan communal area and a swimming pool with views of the Kunene.
Activities include boat cruises in the Kunene River, walking safaris, scenic drive to the Moon Valley and a visit to Himba village to learn more about the local people.
