The Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA) has launched new eSIM technology that will help travellers in and out of South Africa stay connected wherever they are in the world.
An eSIM is the digital version of the physical SIM card that allows mobile phone users to connect to a service provider. The SATSA eSIM, developed in partnership with eSimplified, allows access to data services in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.
In addition to making it easier for travellers to connect while travelling, eSIMs also cut out expensive roaming charges.
“Our new eSIM technology, which I have personally tried and tested, represents a breakthrough in global connectivity. This easy-to-install, budget-friendly solution is poised to transform how individuals and businesses connect while traversing the globe,” said David Frost, CEO of SATSA.
The SATSA eSIM provides a range of package options catering for varied data needs and lengths of stay.
Travellers to South Africa can expect to pay $5.65 (R106) for 1GB of data, valid for seven days on the cheapest package, and $32.50 (R615) for 10GB of data, valid for 30 days. Prices for other territories are all available on the SATSA eSIM website.
“The launch of the SATSA eSIM marks a significant step forward in providing a more connected and efficient travel experience whilst embracing the future of travel technology. We are committed to enhancing the global travel experience through innovative solutions, and our eSIM technology is a testament to this commitment,” says Hannelie du Toit, SATSA COO.
Speaking during a recent industry-wide National Safety Forum, Andre du Toit, Chair of SATSA's Safety & Security Committee, said the SECURA Traveller app, which allows travellers to connect with assistance from anywhere in the country, did not require a local SIM but that visitors to South Africa should be encouraged to ensure they are connected, either through a local SIM or via data roaming.
“You’re travelling in a foreign country, and to communicate, whether you’ve broken down on the side of the road or whatever the case may be, you need to be able to communicate,” he said.
The eSIM allows travellers to arrive at their destinations already connected, without having to go to a store or service provider to buy a physical SIM. For frequent travellers, it allows seamless connection to multiple networks in multiple countries, and because there is no physical card, there is no risk of it being lost or stolen in the process of switching between countries.
