Two new ultra-trail runs showcasing Table Mountain and the Maloti-Drakensberg UNESCO World Heritage Sites are expected to position South Africa as a premier trail running destination and attract thousands of international participants to the country.
Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) and Summit Events have partnered to create the RMB Ultra-trail Cape Town, scheduled for November 22-24, and the RMB Ultra-trail Drakensberg set for April 25-27, 2025.
"This partnership represents a significant milestone in positioning South Africa as a premier destination for ultra-trail running," said Alison Badenhorst, RMB Chief Marketing Officer. “RMB is proud to see our partnership and the sport of trail running growing. We believe in the potential it has to unlock talent.”
Ultra-trail Cape Town Race Director Stuart McConnachie said the events are expected to inject millions of rands into local economies.
“Beyond the immediate economic benefits, the global exposure will have long-lasting effects on our tourism industry, highlighting South Africa as a must-visit destination for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts alike.”
Environmental conservation will be a crucial focus of both events. The organisers are committed to implementing stringent measures to minimise the ecological impact and ensure preservation of these UNESCO World Heritage Sites for future generations. This includes strict waste management protocols, the use of biodegradable materials and partnerships with local conservation groups to promote environmental awareness.
“We're not just running through these landscapes; we're becoming stewards of them,” said McConnachie. “By fostering a deep appreciation for these natural wonders among participants, we hope to create a ripple effect of conservation awareness that extends far beyond the races.”
Badenhorst said the diversity of the terrain will provide an exceptional experience for participants.
