Unions that have called a strike grounding SAA flights this week are pursuing a secondary strike threatening Comair operations.

The National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa) and South African Cabin Crew Association (Sacca) said they would pursue a secondary strike to ensure their demands are met, media reports say. They reportedly warned this could “shut down the entire aviation sector”.

A statement sent to Tourism Update from Comair says they have not yet received the required 48 hours’ strike notice.

“Numsa has been issued two certificates of non-resolution for disputes pertaining to both Comair's ground and cabin crew.

“Before embarking on a strike, NUMSA has to conduct a secret ballot of its members, and thereafter give Comair 48 hours' notice. Comair has not yet received notice,” the airline said.

“Comair has contingency plans in place should ground and / or cabin crew decide to exercise their right to strike.”
