German low-cost carrier, Eurowings, a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, will offer flights from Frankfurt to Windhoek in Namibia, as well as Mauritius, with other destinations currently in the pipeline.
Dr André Schulz, Lufthansa GM for Southern Africa, told Tourism Update that Eurowings would start operating thrice-weekly flights between Frankfurt and Windhoek near the end of October.
However, Schulz says: “The new service with three weekly frequencies is subject to governmental approval.”
Eurowings will deploy an Airbus 330 on the route with a Lufthansa flight number. All flights will be available for bookings as of March 13.
Return flights to Windhoek will be available for €599 including fees and taxes.
The announcement follows the termination of flights operated by Eurowings between Cape Town and Cologne, Germany.
During the Airlines Association of Southern Africa’s (Aasa) 48th General Assembly, which was held at Avani Livingstone Resort in October, Tim Harris, Wesgro CEO, said that while new routes had been added to Cape Town over the past three years, triggering the expansion of the airport, the city had lost the flights operated by Eurowings between Cape Town and Cologne due to South Africa not expanding a bilateral agreement allowing the frequencies needed to make the flights sustainable.
