Kenya Airways will increase frequencies to three regional tourist destinations – Mombasa, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro – in July and August due to increased demand.
Juba in South Sudan and Kigali in Rwanda will also get more flights as a result of increased demand during the peak travel season.
Ursula Silling, Kenya Airways Chief Commercial Officer, said the key routes and additional frequencies were part of the airline’s network expansion strategy, which was essential to the ongoing financial turnaround.
"The additional frequencies will ensure we serve our customers better, more efficiently and in a timely manner. This will also play an important role in growing our business in addition to supporting the tourism industry," said Silling.
As part of its five-year plan, the Kenyan carrier will continue to invest in its network and new routes, including an increase in capacity on both long- and short-haul destinations.
Silling said the coastal city of Mombasa would get two extra flights, bringing the total to 12 daily. The Kilimanjaro route will get an additional flight, bringing the total to two daily.
The Juba, Zanzibar and Kigali routes will each see an additional flight, with four flights a week to Juba (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday); five flights to Zanzibar per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday); and daily flights to Kigali.
The airline will also increase capacity for leisure destinations by operating the Boeing 737-800 to Livingstone, Victoria Falls, and Cape Town. The B737-800 will also fly to Mauritius on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
According to Silling, the airline recently increased frequencies to Rome, Geneva, Mauritius, New York, Libreville, Mogadishu and Malindi. Amsterdam and Paris frequencies have also been increased.
