The heated debate about the Tourism Equity Fund has many in the industry questioning the timing. Others see it as discrimination, some question the efficacy of the fund to be able to create meaningful transformation while others simply say, it is “about time”.
AfriForum and Solidarity are seeking legal action while the Minister of Tourism, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, is digging in her heels on government’s “unwavering commitment” to the transformation agenda.
This week’s top comment comes from Owner and Director of Alpha Destinations, Angela Matthews:
“In the heated discussion about the TEF, one thing is often ignored: that the tourism industry is first and foremost a service industry.
“There are so many opportunities in the tourism sector that require little starting capital. What it requires is passion, hard work, tenacity and the ability not to give up when the going gets tough – and the willingness to be of service to your clients, even if you are the CEO, GM, director, or whatever you want to call yourself. And no, it’s hardly ever glamorous.”
