Air India has confirmed that it is planning to relaunch flights to Nairobi following a seven-year absence. Air India Spokesperson, Dhananjay Kumar, says the airline is currently undertaking market research and, based on these findings, will make decisions regarding the launch date and aircraft used.

Welcoming the news of the planned route launch, Devan Jobanputra of Kenya-based Travel ‘n Style, says tourism from India is on the rise. “The two nations have very strong historic ties. Business travel accounts for a significant portion of the travel between the two countries, but leisure and VFR are equally as big.”

Travel ‘n Style has created tailor-made experiences for Indian travellers. “These are mainly mid-range to high-end, with most going on safari to the Masai Mara, the lakes, Mount Kenya region and Samburu,” says Jobanputra. “They would spend a night or two in Nairobi visiting friends and family,” and adds that many Indian travellers come to Kenya for special occasions such as weddings, followed by a safari.

Jobanputra says Kenya’s rates are not an issue, as many of the country’s mid-range properties offer Indian market rates outside of peak season. “Excellent meals at hotels and lodges across the country also add to the experience.”

However, in terms of the challenges, he says Kenya doesn’t have a standard product showcasing the country’s attractions, history, culture and sightseeing, which are hugely untapped. “With better infrastructure, there could be more opportunities for coach travel across the country, but it’s a matter of numbers versus quality.”
