A fire in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park on Friday, November 25, burned down the restaurant and a nearby shop. The fire started in the restaurant kitchen but the rest of the Storms River Camp is open and unharmed.
A helicopter managed to stop the fire from spreading to the forest, accommodation area, camping and hiking trails.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and damage is estimated to be R10m (€676 000).
All day activities in the Storms River Rest Camp are operational, including the re-routed walk to the suspension bridge, water activities, day hikes and day trips to the river gorge. Park management will provide a temporary structure for the restaurant and shop.
Water and electricity were unaffected and are available in the camp. Park management has advised visitors to bring their own meals and drinks or use facilities in the Storms River village, 10 minutes from the park.
