An investigation has been launched into the root cause of two separate fires that affected accommodation establishments – Sun City’s Cabanas and Manyane Resort – in the North West Province over the weekend.
There were no injuries reported for either incident and the MEC for the Department of Economic Development Environment Conservation and Tourism in the North West Province, Virginia Thlapi, said in a statement today that she was working “hand in glove” with the management of Sun City and Manyane Resort to try and normalise the situation.
According to Sun City GM, Brett Hoppe, a fire broke out in the Cabanas Hotel kitchen at about 14h30 on Saturday afternoon (September 16), the staff noticed a small fire which they extinguished, but it had already spread through the extraction ventilation to the reception area.
In a separate incident, about 10 minutes after the Sun City fire, Manyane Resort –in the same district as Sun City – also had a fire on the property. Tourism Update understands from a North West government spokesperson that 40 chalets went up in flames at the resort.
Manyane is closed until further notice.
These incidents occurred just over two weeks after the Pilanesberg International Airport near Sun City caught fire. No one was injured in that fire. An investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
