Hideaways has expanded its portfolio with the addition of Rio Azul Lodge, set on the banks of the Govuro River in Mozambique.

Katja Quasdorf, CEO of Hideaways, says Rio Azul is an existing lodge that has been operational for several years. “Last year we were approached to look at the product and, after long discussions, brainstorming and site inspections, we jointly decided on a refurbishment of the lodge and agreed on a vision for the property and the product that we would like to deliver in order for it to be able to join the Hideaways collection and our quest of delivering life-changing experiences.”

According to Quasdorf, Rio Azul is a perfect fit for Hideaways as it provides barefoot luxury and serenity in a secluded location, sharing Hideaways’ ethos of touching the earth lightly by being sustainable and eco-friendly.

The company is deep rooted in conservation. “It is important to note that our guests contribute to the improvement of the area as their stay supports our goal to create a protected Marine Reserve in the lagoon, a truly life-changing experience for guests, locals and the environment,” she says.

Quasdorf says Hideaways sees an opportunity to create educational guided experiences in the different eco systems in which the lodge is situated (beach, lagoon, mangrove forests), allowing those who have just experienced a wildlife safari in Hwange National Park to continue to enjoy guiding in Mozambique.

The lodge is in a remote location, with island, beach, lagoon and estuarine activities such as snorkelling, kayaking through mangrove forests, beach picnics and trips to the Bazaruto Archipelago.

The six chalets can each accommodate two adults as well as one child sharing. The two Family Villas can sleep up to six adults and up to four children in the lofts.

One of the highlights for guests is a private excursion on a small boat to explore the lagoon, accompanied by a private guide.
