A 24% growth in overnight visitors has ensured that Johannesburg remains the top overnight destination in Africa, and second in the Africa and Middle East region, according to the MasterCard Global Index. Cape Town is ranked second in Africa, and sixth in the region.

Johannesburg saw an increase of about 890 000 visitors from 2015, while Cape Town saw an increase of about 200 000. Johannesburg is 1,57 million visitors behind Prague, the 20th ranked destination globally in terms of international overnight visitors. Most of Johannesburg’s overnight visitors are regional travellers with Mozambique the largest source market, followed by Zimbabwe and Lesotho.

Bangkok has remained the top destination city globally, with London second, Paris third, Dubai fourth and Singapore fifth.
The report, released annually, aims to pinpoint exactly where international travellers go and how they spend their money when visiting new cities.
