Georges Pierre Lesjongard has been appointed new Minister of Tourism for Mauritius.
During a graduation ceremony at the Vatel Hotel & Tourism Business School this month, Lesjongard emphasised that “the success of the tourism industry is highly dependent on the creativity, skills and commitment of the workforce”.
“Mauritius, as a multicultural rainbow nation, has a lot to offer as a tourist destination”, he added.
He stressed the importance of keeping pace with competitive markets and providing better quality services in the face of the rapid growing nature of the tourism industry worldwide.
Lesjongard also underlined the need to continuously innovate and invest in additional skills and human capital while maintaining the essential assets of Mauritius.
The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority told Tourism Update that Mauritius had experienced positive year-on-year growth in tourist arrivals for the past three years – 2.8% in 2016, 7% in 2017, and 14.2% in 2018. The country’s top source markets for January to September this year include France, Réunion, the UK, Germany and South Africa.
Lesjongard has worked in several posts in government, including as Member of Parliament, Minister of Land and Housing, and Deputy Speaker.
