The TUI Care Foundation has launched a pioneering programme to train 12 women as tourist guides and drivers through its TUI Futureshapers Namibia programme. Alongside the training aspect of the programme, a new fleet of 10 electric vehicles (EVs) will be launched in partnership with local start-up LEFA – driven exclusively by skilled female drivers.

In their new roles as professional tour guides, the women will be equipped to offer tours of Windhoek to local and international visitors. The introduction of EVs is also expected to play a role in promoting innovation and expanding the number of EV charging stations in the country. Overall, the programme is expected to support 100 livelihoods throughout its implementation.

“We are proud to be at the forefront of a transformative initiative that not only advances sustainable transportation in Namibia but also empowers women to take on new roles in our community,” said LEFA Transportation Services CEO Melkies Ausiku.

“This programme is more than just about reducing emissions; it's about driving change, fostering economic growth and reshaping societal norms in Windhoek and beyond."

TUI Care Foundation Executive Director Alexander Panczuk said the initiative celebrates the capabilities of Namibian women and the unique contributions they bring to the tourism sector.

TUI Futureshapers Namibia is part of the global TUI Futureshapers Programme, which has empowered people to turn social challenges into entrepreneurial opportunities in destinations such as Cape Verde, Zanzibar, Senegal, Portugal, Greece and Tunisia.

The initiative is part of the TUI Care Foundation’s Entrepreneurship October – a month dedicated to highlighting support for sustainable businesses in tourism destinations.
