The majority of Tourism Update readers believe increasing park fees won’t be enough to solve over-tourism issues burdening certain national parks such as the Serengeti and Maasai Mara during peak visiting times.

Responding to our latest poll, 53% of readers said they didn’t believe increasing park fees would prevent over-tourism while funding conservation. Another 36% of respondents said this would solve the issue and the remaining 11% were “unsure”.

Over-tourism during the Great Migration has been a growing issue for reserves such as the Serengeti and Maasai Mara with evidence increasingly showing negative impacts on the environment and wildlife. Increasing park fees has been touted as a solution along with tourist quotas.

Could Cape Town host the 2040 Olympics?

Last week, Tourism Update explored the potential of Cape Town successfully hosting the 2040 Summer Olympic Games.

Proponents of an Olympic bid argue the city already has around 85% of the sporting infrastructure required to host the mega event – and this would help catalyse and speed up the city’s spatial restructuring and regeneration with billions of euros of tourism revenue.

However, research shows no city has ever been able to host the games under budget. Rio de Janeiro ran 352% over budget. Paris is expected to exceed its budget by 115%. So, would the massive investment be worth the returns?
