South African Airways has launched a ‘fall in love with South Africa’ campaign, offering special fares in tandem with Valentine’s month to entice travellers to visit the country.
Lower fares are on offer for roundtrips from Washington DC’s Dulles International Airport, and New York’s JFK International Airport, to Johannesburg and Cape Town.
“The travel period for this fare sale is April 1 through May 31 (blackout dates of April 16 to 30), which is the shoulder season for travel to South Africa from the North American market,” Todd Neuman, Executive Vice President of SAA North America, told Tourism Update. “This provides us with an opportunity to stimulate demand and increase tourism arrivals to South Africa during what is traditionally a slower travel period from North America. These very affordable fares, combined with the favourable exchange rate in South Africa, provide a great occasion for North American travellers to experience the country and its rich culture and heritage, warm hospitable people, spectacular scenery and abundant wildlife.”
Neuman said he had seen previous fare specials playing a notable role in increasing bookings to South Africa. “Our most recent fare special, which we offered over the US Thanksgiving holiday in November, saw a significant increase in bookings to South Africa. Our approach is strategic in the timing of these special fare offerings when demand is low, so we play a positive role increasing arrivals and providing a chance for more North American visitors to experience South Africa.”
Increased arrivals brought additional spend in foreign currency to the country, said Neuman, which helped to increase economic growth, foster job creation and support the important tourism sector in South Africa. “As the national carrier, South African Airways plays a pivotal role in this mission.”
Tickets for the special fares must be purchased by February 15.
