South African National Parks (SANParks) marked Mandela Day with initiatives nationwide to support local communities, reinforcing Nelson Mandela's legacy through meaningful actions.
At Bontebok National Park, staff collaborated with the Railton Foundation, Swellendam municipality, and other stakeholders at St. Patrick's Catholic Church food garden. They cleaned, seeded, and harvested vegetables, providing a meal for local community members.
Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) marked Mandela Day with Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages donating rain suits to 67 rangers.
TMNP's Socio-Economic Transformation Department also distributed food parcels to the Jones Safe House in Kommetjie and the Masi Educare Centre in Masiphumelele.
SANParks, the Honorary Rangers South Region, and the Ndlovukazi Foundation celebrated Mandela Day at Phefeni Secondary School in Soweto. They provided much-needed sanitary items for girl students.
Cape Region management staff visited Struisies Speelskool in Struisbaai and donated stationery, toys, and supplies, continuing a partnership between Agulhas National Park and the crèche that began in 2001.
Reflecting on these activities, SANParks emphasised the impact of collective action in honouring Nelson Mandela's legacy
“A global movement for positive change begins with small actions. As each person acts, they fuel momentum toward positive change, raising awareness and expanding the reach of Mr Mandela's values of fighting injustice, helping people in need and practising reconciliation,” a SANParks spokesperson said.
