The number of foreign travellers to South Africa decreased by 5.7% for the month of September (1 219 616 travellers), compared with September last year (1 293 615), according to the September 2019 Tourism and Migration Statistics report published by Statistics South Africa.
From August to September this year, the volume of arrivals of foreign travellers decreased by 11.5% (from 1 377 914 in August to 1 219 616 in September).
September 2019 figures compared with the same month last year, saw a notable drop in visitors from Europe and Australasia, led by traveller declines from Germany (10.7%), Belgium (11.9%), France (17.9%) and Australia (14.7%).
Notable increases for the same periods, include the US (2.1%), India (8.9%) and Brazil (11.9%).
Year-to-date comparisons (January to September cumulative tourist numbers) showed a drop in overseas traveller numbers from 1.795 million to 1.757 million (2.1%).
