The Hector Pieterson Museum in Soweto is closed temporarily while the roof is repaired and other maintenance is carried out. The roof and ceiling were damaged in December following heavy rains.
Nthatisi Modingoane, Spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg, estimates that the museum will reopen in the last week of March.
The outdoor memorial site is still accessible to the public. Museum guides are available to give visitors more information about the museum and the history of Soweto, despite not being able to enter the museum. “We would like to apologise profusely to our museum lovers for the temporary closure,” said Modingoane.
