The renowned Lüderitz Speed Challenge is taking place along the Atlantic coastline in southern Namibia until November 27.
Every year, during October and November, the world's best windsurfers gather at a specially made kilometre-long channel alongside the second lagoon to break national and world speed windsurfing records.
To date, no fewer than 150 national and 20 world speed windsurfing records have been smashed.
The national speed windsurfing records of South Africa, Namibia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Fiji, Italy, Japan, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and world records for both men and women have been recorded here.
Current South African speed windsurfing champions are Marc Grinnell (Cape Town) and Karo von Tonder (Langebaan). Both Marc and Karo are also holders of the Africa records.
Bjorn Dunkerbeck from Denmark, forty-two-times Windsurfing World Champion and RED BULL Ambassador – a regular participant at the event – says: “I have been coming since 2012 every year to attend the Lüderitz Speed Challenge as it offers the fastest water on the planet. During the 2021 event, I achieved 103,67kph, my fastest ever max speed on a windsurf board.”
