Most tourists to South Africa from the rest of Africa in November 2019 came from the SADC countries, but showed a slight decrease compared with the same month in 2018, according to the latest figures by Statistics South Africa.
Although there was an increase in visitors from Swaziland and Mozambique, there was a decrease in visitors from eight of the ten leading countries –Zambia, Angola, Malawi, Namibia, Tanzania, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
November 2019 saw a 2.2% decrease in tourists from the SADC region compared with the same month in 2018, with the biggest drop from Zambia, which showed a 10.6% decease.
The breakdown of the African arrivals by region is as follows: 587 324 from the SADC countries; 6 388 from East and Central Africa; 6 075 from West Africa, and 1 868 from North Africa.
Holidays remained the number-one reason for travel to South Africa by African tourists, at 97.6%, which is slightly higher than November 2018’s 97.5%. Medical tourists from African countries decreased from 0.5% in the same month in 2018 to 0.3% in November 2019.
